I've just recently got a kalimba as a gift from my partner. The kalimba has cat ears and looks and sounds absolutely beautiful. It's very relaxing to listen to the sound of this instrument, and I love how easy it is to learn this, considering the fact that I have no knowledge in music, nor can I read music notes.
When you order a kalimba usually it includes a free set of stickers that would act as a guide to help you learn the tabs/notes easier or distinguish them from one another. I prefer using the stickers that would make the Kalimba's tab notes stand out more, I didn't use the color-coded line stickers. It also includes a pouch, a small hammer to help you tune your kalimba, and a booklet for a list of songs for beginners to learn. It's pretty interesting how affordable a kalimba is but is so cool to use.
Why do you want a kalimba? Here are some of the reasons majority of the people have mentioned:
Easy to learn
Like the sound
For relaxation/meditation
Saw it in a YouTube video
To help keep the mind young
The 17-key kalimba, often referred to as a thumb piano, is an pretty good starting point for beginners. Here are the following reasons why:
Portability: The 17-note thumb piano is compact and lightweight, making it exceptionally easy to carry around.
Ease of Learning: With fewer keys and a simpler tone range, the 17-key kalimba is less overwhelming for newcomers. This simplicity allows beginners to quickly grasp the basics of kalimba playing.
Affordability: If you're working within a budget, the 17-key kalimba is a cost-effective choice. Generally, the 17-note thumb pianos are more affordable than their 21-note counterparts, offering a budget-friendly option for those just starting.
